When we were students we had to write on slates, and if it rained we fell off the roof. Fortunately, things have come a long way since those days, to a point where students can watch certain lectures over and over again if they wish. At LSTM for example, we use Panopto to record lectures, after which our students can use the recordings as a revision aid.
When it comes to the recording of lectures, both students and lecturers have certain questions and concerns. In this blog we have compiled some of the most common questions that we are asked and attempted to answer them for you.
“What do you record?”
Recordings typically consist of whatever is being shown on the lecture theatre screen, audio of your voice and a webcam video. In other words, we record you, your voice and your slides. If you want one of the video feeds removed (e.g. you’re having a bad hair day and you’d rather the recording just included your slides and your voice) we can remove it for you as long as you let us know within 24 hours of the end of the recording.
“What do I need to do?”
All we need from you is your consent to be recorded. On 27 August 2017 LSTM introduced a more robust consent process for lecture capture requiring all lecturers to agree to LSTM’s audio/video release agreement. Even if you provided consent before this date, we need your agreement to the latest audio/video release if we are to record your lectures. If you are an internal lecturer just click this link to check whether you have already given/refused consent to be recorded. If you have, you won’t be able to complete the form again. If you haven’t, it will only take a minute or two. Once we’ve received your consent to be recorded, recording takes place automatically so you don’t have to worry about starting or stopping recording, and you are not required to do anything after the lecture to share the recordings.
“Do I have to take part?”
No, you can refuse consent altogether or opt out at any time in the future but we encourage you to take part because we know from feedback that students find this technology very helpful in support of their learning. If you don’t want to be recorded, the consent form gives you the option to refuse consent.
“Who will be able to access my recording?“
Recordings will only be made available through Brightspace to registered LSTM students. Recordings cannot be downloaded or shared with people from outside the school or course, so recordings won’t appear within the public domain.
“Why do you keep emailing me?”
We are trying to encourage as many staff as possible to let us know whether they consent to be recorded using the online form (link above). If you’re receiving lots of emails from us, it may indicate that we haven’t heard from you, in which case letting us know one way or another will stop the emails. Even if you think you’ve provided consent, if it was before 27 August 2017 we still need you to agree to the latest audio/video release agreement.
“What if I say or present something I would like to remove from the recording?”
Recordings can be easily edited or trimmed after the lecture, and we can do this for you or show you how to do it yourself. We delay the availability of recordings to students by 24hrs to provide the time for any needed editing to take place, so if you need to edit anything from a recording you’ll just need to let us know within 24 hours.
If there’s anything you’d like to ask in addition to the above please email us at tel@lstmed.ac.uk and we’ll be pleased to help. In the meantime please do check whether you’ve given us your consent to be recorded, otherwise your students could miss out on a really valuable resource!
